Numerex Corp. (Nasdaq: NMRX), a leading single source provider of secure machine-to-machine (M2M) products and services, today announced that Dr. Jeff Smith, Chief Technology Officer of Numerex, was invited to speak in the forthcoming months at several key M2M Standards events as Chairman of the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) TR-50 Engineering Committee for Smart Device Communications. TIA TR-50 and similar Standards Developing Organizations around the world are working to provide the necessary foundation for M2M end-to-end functionality and interoperability.
"We are fortunate to be able to rely on
Numerex and other such premier companies with a thorough knowledge of
the industry to lead our Smart Device Communications-related
standardization activities. M2M is a critical area of focus at TIA. As
a matter of fact, Smart Device and M2M Network will be one of our
summit tracks during our annual event, TIA 2011: Inside the Network, on May 18-20, 2011 in Dallas," said Grant Seiffert, President of TIA.
Dr. Smith, as part of the TIA delegation and Chair of TR-50, will
give a presentation on TR-50's activities during the M2M session of the
15th meeting of Global Standards Collaboration (GSC-15),
hosted by the China Communications Standards Association (CCSA), which
will take place in Beijing, China on August 30th - September 2nd. At
GSC, which meets approximately every year, the world's leading
telecommunications and radio standards organizations meet to promote
innovation and collaboration on a broad spectrum of standards topics.
M2M has been identified as a "High Interest Subject" for 2010. Some
hundred participants from Participating Standards Organizations (PSO)
and ITU (International Telecommunications Union) attend, along with
observers from additional groups.
On September 25th, he will be speaking at the Benson Center of Santa Clara University at a workshop on M2M Communications, Emerging devices and "the Internet of Things"
sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society, Santa Clara Valley
Chapter and the North America Taiwanese Engineers' Association. The
presentation will be on "Standardization as a Catalyst of M2M Market
Expansion".
Dr. Smith will be one of the keynote speakers at the M2M Evolution Conference
event during Technology Marketing Corporation (TMC)'s ITEXPO at the Los
Angeles Convention Center on October 5th. His talk will highlight
"International Cooperation in the Area of M2M Standardization." "The
participation of experts with concrete and proven experience such as
Dr. Jeff Smith of Numerex as well as the active support and interest
from TIA will be extremely valuable to the M2M Evolution Conference
attendees," said Carl Ford Co-founder of Crossfire Media, a partner in
the M2M Conference.
Later in the month, the European Telecommunications Standards
Institute (ETSI), recognized as an official European standards
organization by the European Union with more than 700 members drawn
from 62 countries across 5 continents, will host an open workshop on Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Communications,
to be held at the ETSI headquarters in Sophia Antipolis, France, on
19th - 20th October. The goals of the workshop are to present the
status of M2M standards work, both in ETSI and other standards bodies;
identify additional needs from the impacted industrial and academic
segments for the further standardization of M2M communications; and
examine how M2M capabilities will be one stepping stone amongst several
toward the Internet of Things. Dr. Smith will be addressing the main
characteristics and challenges of "M2M's Intelligent Edge".
Stratton Nicolaides, Numerex's Chairman and CEO commented, "The
adoption of standards will open up new opportunities and accelerate the
growth of the M2M industry. Standards enable scale and make application
development easier, faster and more cost-effective. As a result,
Numerex supports the M2M standardization efforts around the world. TIA,
with its long history in telecommunications standardization and policy
advocacy, is the ideal venue for Numerex to play an active role in this
undertaking."
